This five-course series covers the basic principles and concepts of ICT design and installation:

  • Structured Cabling Systems
This course defines what a structured cabling system (SCS) and explains how its components are used to provide predictable performance while supporting moves, adds, and changes (MACs), and future growth.
  • Telecommunications Media
This course explains how information is transmitted via three types of telecommunications cabling (balanced twisted-pair, coaxial, and optical fiber). It covers the primary advantages and disadvantages associated with each type of cable.
  • Bonding and Grounding
This course addresses how proper bonding and grounding safeguards personnel and property from electrical currents.
  • Network Design
This course covers design considerations for traditional wired networks, data center networks, and wireless networks.
  • Project Management
This course explains how project management principles are used to manage ICT projects from bidding to closeout.

At the end of the series, you can complete a 100-question exam to assess your mastery of the knowledge and skills that were taught in the series.

Individual Fundamentals of ICT Courses

ICT Fundamentals Bonding and Grounding

3 Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

In normal conditions, telecommunications cables do not carry voltage, but what if something goes wrong? Fault conditions can cause high voltages to surge into the cables with potentially fatal consequences. In this course, you will learn how proper bonding and grounding can protect ICT equipment, your client’s reputation, your job, and even your life!

Grounding and bonding are an integral portion of the telecommunications infrastructure for providing a safe electrical operating environment. They are also instrumental in providing a reliable reference for the operation of electronic equipment. This course covers basic electrical theory and grounding and bonding system configurations and components.

This is the third course in the Introduction to ICT Series. BICSI recommends that students complete this course, along with the other courses in the series, before they take the Introduction to ICT exam.

ICT Fundamentals Telecommunications Media

8 Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

This course explores the transmission of information over various forms of telecommunications media, including balanced twisted-pair, coaxial, and optical fiber cabling. It focuses on the common characteristics of those mediums and how their construction affects transmission. The course also explains how various installation methods will affect transmission.

This is the second course in the ICT Fundamentals Series. BICSI recommends that students complete this course, along with the other courses in the series, before they take the ICT Fundamentals exam.

ICT Fundamentals Project Management

2 Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

Project management is required to manage and control projects with teams. It has become an important part of the ICT industry and an important and unique career path for the ICT design professional. This course reviews the common tools and techniques used to ensure a successful project completion.

This is the fifth course in the Introduction to ICT Series. BICSI recommends that students complete this course, along with the other courses in the series, before they take the Introduction to ICT exam.

ICT Fundamentals Structured Cabling

7 Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

In this course, you will have a chance to follow along as an ICT design firm attempts to meet the telecommunications requirements of three demanding clients:

  • College that wants to improve its infrastructure in the hopes of attracting more students
  • Traditional multinational corporation that is building a new facility to serve as one of its regional headquarters
  • Video game production studio investing in a state-of-the-art open-format campus

In this course, you will learn how a structured cabling system and its subsystems can be used to meet a customer’s telecommunications requirements. It defines what an SCS is and how its components work together to provide predictable performance while supporting moves, adds, and changes (MACs) and future growth.

This is the first course in the ICT Fundamentals Series. BICSI recommends that students complete this course, along with the other courses in the series, before they take the ICT Fundamentals exam.

ICT Fundamentals Network Design

7 Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

Network users generally do not think in terms of the complexity of the underlying network. They think of the network as a means of accessing the applications they need, when they need them. For ICT professionals, however, it is critical to know how a network is built and how to meet the end users’ needs.

In this course, you will learn how a network’s design can affect accessibility and reliability for the end user. In addition, you will learn about network requirements in a data center as well as the design considerations for a wireless network.

This is the fourth course in the Introduction to ICT Series. BICSI recommends that students complete this course, along with the other courses in the series, before they take the Introduction to ICT exam.
